Improved oral hygiene care is associated with decreased risk for atrial fibrillation and heart failure
Poor oral hygiene can cause a short-term presence of bacteria in blood as well as systemic inflammation, two mediators of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. In a 2020 population-based cohort study, the association of oral hygiene care with the previously noted heart conditions was investigated. Results showed a significant association between frequent tooth brushing and decreased risk of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. The dental cleanings were also protective against heart failure while tooth loss was associated with increased risk of heart failure. The study indicates that healthier oral hygiene by frequent tooth brushing and professional dental cleaning may reduce risk of these conditions.
