Dentistry’s past, present and future!
Historically, dentistry’s roots date back to 7000 BC in the Indus Valley Civilization.1 Ancient Greeks wrote about dentistry, however, the first dental text published at the end of the Middle Ages (1500’s).1 Dentistry evolved as a profession over the past several thousand years and spread globally.
In the United States, Baltimore established the first dental college in the mid-1800’s.1 Today there are over 200,000 dentists in the United States,2 and the GEHA Connection Dental Network has providers in all states and provides coverage globally. Dentistry as a profession has found a home in universities across the United States and around the world. Dental jobs are projected to continue to grow at 6% in the United States.3
