Opioid Patient-Prescriber Agreement
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) developed an Opioid Patient-Prescriber Agreement (PPA) as part of its Safe Use Initiative that is available to use and adopt throughout the health care ecosystem.
The intent of this document is to:
- Create an open conversation between the patient and the prescriber about the benefits, risks, and limitations of opioid medicines;
- Be used as a decision-making tool before an opioid medicine is used for acute or persistent pain; and
- Ensure the appropriate and safe use of opioid medicines.
PPA sections:
- Part 1: For the patient: Deciding whether to use opioid medicines for pain
- Part 2: For the patient: My promise to using opioid medicines safely
- Part 3: For the patient and the prescriber
The Opioid PPA is available for any health care professional to aid in fostering a two-way conversation around the topic of safe opioid use and is not mandated, though similar opioid treatment agreements are now being required in some jurisdictions across the U.S.
